The Project
Splice housed offline and completed full post-production for the one-hour documentary for ITV as part of their Crime & Punishment season. Presented by Sir Trevor McDonald, the documentary features exclusive interviews and insights into one of the most disturbing and notorious murder cases in British history. Post production executive, Caroline Hewson was post producer for the film.
Colour Grading
Head of picture, Adam Dolniak graded on Filmlight's Baselight. Archive was cleaned up and balanced using Baselight's de-noise and sharpen tools. Adam worked on relighting the interview setups using shapes and adding gradients and vignettes. The scenes with Sir Trevor in the investigation room were given a more stylised look by cooling off the spotlights as you can see in the still above.
Audio Post Production
Senior dubbing mixer, Joe Cochrane mixed the film on the Avid S6 M40 on ProTools 12. Joe layered up sound effects to enhance the archive footage and add to the dark character and mood of the film. Voice-recording Sir Trevor ending up taking place over two sessions that were weeks apart due to a recut so Joe ensured close attention was paid to matching and blending the two narrations.
Online Editing
Head of online, Tristan Lancey completed the online in Avid Symphony with Baselight BLG plugin integration which allowed flexibility for last-minute changes whilst ensuring Adam's grade remained consistent. To further clean up the archive material Tristan used Boris FX's image restoration tools followed by Photoshop to touch up and add film grain. Tristan made further use of Boris FX and Mocha Plugins for any blurring, paint-outs and screen corner pinning needed.
