My alarm goes off...

I can count on my two-year-old 'alarm clock' called Sebastian to wake me up every morning.  I normally arrive in work slightly before 9, make myself the breakfast of champions – two slices of crunchy peanut butter on toast – and a double espresso...followed by another...and maybe another!

I’m responsible for…

Day to day I'm responsible for ensuring the facility runs smoothly from a technical perspective. This involves everything from meeting prospective clients to discuss their needs, workflow creation, media management, ingesting rushes and resolving any technical issues that may arise.

I got my job…

Previously I worked for ITV at The London Studios with Simon Petrovitch (Splice's Operations Manager in Shoreditch).  I had since moved to Wales and when the company were planning to open the facility in Cardiff Simon kindly chucked my name into the mix! I met with Kate, Damian and Duncan and here I am.

My typical day…

My job really varies from day to day. Typically it starts the same most days - I check my emails, catch up with Lou (our Facilities Manager & Post Producer) and pop round to the edits to check that everything is ticking over nicely. From that point on it really depends on what specific jobs we have for that day or whether there are any immediate technical challenges that need attention, prioritise the workload and take it from there.

My most memorable work moment…

A moment fresh in my memory is when I looked around me and all the edits were full and there was a real buzz about the place. Only weeks before, when I first started, the facility was still being built - we were all wearing hi-viz and it felt a million miles away from the point where we are now. I'm really proud of the facility and of all the work that everyone involved has put in to get it to this point. (But having Biffy Clyro in with us the other day was pretty cool too!)

The worst part of my job…

Currently, the worst part of my job is the commute.  I don't mind it on the way in as it's a chance to catch up on emails or read but after work, you just want to be at home as quickly as possible.

The best part of my job…

Working with lots of different people – editors, producers, directors. I really enjoy collaborating and working together with the singular aim of delivering the best content that we can. No day is the same and no person you meet is the same, it definitely keeps things interesting.

After work…

I love cooking but often it's a bit late to make anything too ambitious.  In an ideal world my wife and I would have a chat and a catch-up but in reality one of us normally falls asleep next to Seb when we're putting him to bed!

My Plan B....

When I was young I wanted to be a chef and I was, in fact, for a while (nearly 20 years ago)!  But the reality of working every evening, every weekend and every Christmas for the foreseeable kind of put me off in the end.  I still love cooking at home though and watching MasterChef, of course!

Sam is our Operations Manager in Cardiff and started with us in Summer 2018.
