My alarm goes off…

My 2-year old daughter is my alarm clock.  Regardless of whether it’s a weekday or a weekend she wakes up between 5 and 6 am. We start the morning with some animated movies, usually Minions or Toy Story. After that we have breakfast together, I have what she has, these days it’s Weetabix, she loves Weetabix. After breakfast, I make my way to work. I try to get in early so I can get ahead of the game.

Myself! (laughs) ...apart from that the smooth running of my projects and making sure our clients get the best overall experience of Splice. You want to make sure people are happy, that everyone gets out what they want to achieve for their project.

As well as the client side, I do like the numbers part of the job too. My dad used to be a Financial Director, he would teach me about profit and loss and how the accounting side of a business works, I have quite an interest in that.

I studied Film, TV & Drama but I always liked the behind the scenes work rather than to get in front of a camera.  I wanted to work in a pub, because of the social factor, but after a while, I thought ‘Well I’ve studied this, let’s give it a go and see how far I get!’ I went around Soho and handed in my CV, which eventually led me to a runner role in a post-production company.  It was in my early days that I met Simon Petrovitch (now Operations Manager of Splice), and he recommended me to Damian Dolniak (one of Splice’s co-founders).  I got a call from him, they were just getting started back then, and I felt that it was an opportunity where I could utilise what I had learned over the years...and the rest, as they say, is history.  

A day at Splice is never the same, so I find it difficult to describe. My work is obviously mainly post-producing, but as we do lots of different genres - documentaries, scripted comedy, drama - they all have different needs. I enjoy doing scripted comedy series,  they have a more complex workflow and I like the challenge.

Splice won Highly Commended in the Best Post-Production House category at the Broadcast Awards back in 2010, it had only opened in 2002 so considering our size it was a huge moment for us; we were used to seeing all the bigger places win it every year & to get that recognition so early on, we knew that we were doing something right.

It can be hard to get home for my daughter’s bedtime when we’re up against a TX or really tight deadline, but that’s not too often and 9/10 I do make it back thanks to the amazing team of post producers who are always there to support.

Seeing shows you work on finally go on screen, especially when you’ve been so heavily involved,  I get a lot of satisfaction from that! 

In the old days, I might have gone for a drink, but that has stopped now (laughs). Now it’s all about family time, trying to get home for my toddler’s bath time, bedtime, and then have dinner myself. I try to watch the shows that we do and by the time that’s all done I’m knackered enough to go to bed.

Theatre lighting designer - I studied Theatre at A Levels. I always enjoyed doing lighting for shows. You can have a range of styles with lighting and it sets the mood for the show. I was never afraid of climbing up the scaffolding to adjust the lights and  I loved working behind the scenes and seeing something come together.

Ramit is one of our Post Production Executives and started with us in 2007.
